Former Gymnast Wins Olympic Gold

Australia has won a 3rd  medal in Vancouver making the 2010 Games our most successful Winter Olympics ever with former Gymnast Lydia Lassila winning gold in the Women’s Aerials at Cypress Mountain.

Lassila’s triumph came after Torah Bright’s gold in Halfpipe and Dale Begg-Smith’s silver in Moguls, the first time Australia has won three medals at any Winter Olympics.

Rhythmic Gymnastics Visits Canada

Olympic champion Evgeniya Kanaeva (pictured) and her Russian teammates scooped up eight of the 12 medals up for grabs at the first-ever rhythmic gymnastics world cup event held in North America.

Not surprisingly Kanaeva was the class of the field, earning gold medals for her dazzling ball and ribbon routines set to music, and silver and bronze medals in the hoop and rope events respectively.

100 Days Until the Pacific Rim Championships

With 2010 well and truly underway, and January 19th marks the 100 days to go milestone of the 2010 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships.

The countdown is on to the 2010 Pacific Rim Championships, and in 100 days’ time the powerhouses of world gymnastics will descend on Melbourne for four days of artistic, rhythmic and trampolining action from April 29 to May 2, 2010.

Mitchell Takes Out Junior Sports Award

Lauren Mitchell started 2010 in fine form winning the prestigious WA Smarter Than Smoking Junior Sport Star Award held at Burswood Entertainment Complex.

Over 700 guests (including four tables of gymnastics supporters) watched as Lauren received the award in recognition of her outstanding year in 2008/09 – winning the World Cup Final on Beam and then two silver medals at the 2009 London Artistic World Championships.

Brazilian Gymnast Tests Positive

Former world champion gymnast Daiane dos Santos has tested positive for the drug Furosemide during a non-competition doping control.

The International Gymnastics Federation says on its Web site that Santos, the floor exercise world champion in 2003, had knee surgery this year and could have been given the drug by mistake. She tested positive in July.
